Actuallly this is sparked by a comment in CNN's iReport, and is a sentiment / concept I stated on Twitter.
Prop 8 failed because a lot of Good Christian Blacks voted for Obama.
OK, here comes the twisty bit: is this a racist view? Well, I guess it depends what you think I mean by it. Is it the fault of blacks as per this story: Racist Gays Blaming Blacks?
It could easily be racist. Or simply a fact. Obama (if you hadn't noticed) is black. Given the huge impact of a person of colour being in the presidential race it was likely that many other black people would vote for him, in much the same way that if it had been Hilary Clinton a larger number of women would be expected to vote for her.
A large number of black people are, what is the pc term?, Non-Liberal Christians in that they do not support the idea that homosexuals should get Marriage and should be satisfied with a civil union so were going to vote Yes to Prop 8. So, Race brough people to vote on 2 issues. 1 was race related (Presidential) while the other was a matter of religious morality (Prop 8).
My take is that Blacks/Latio's and others were brought to the polls because of Obama. While they were there they voted on Prop 8 and as Non-liberal Christians voted Yes.
The mistake a lot of liberals made is thinking that one minority / oppressed group would automatically support another such group in an issue seen by many as a Civil Liberties issue. But isn't that itself a form of stereotyping? An expectation that if ~I~ am liberal and think you should be allowed XYZ civil liberty/right then you are somehow on my side, duty bound to be just as liberal as I am to any other random group, even if you happen to be a Word of God Christian and feel that homosexuality, evolution and abortion are Evil while I am so Pro-Choice-anything I end up buried in my own rhetoric?
Choice. Everyone had a choice, and a vote. I don't like it. I think it is stupid, but the thing I think is worst is that it also seems about money: who had the money to pay for the ads that got people to vote their way.
And the issue of sides polarising against one another. 100 years ago women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't vote. Blacks couldn't marry whites and so on. It'll change. Maybe not just yet but I think it will.
The same could be said for Latinos, apparently:CNN / Commentary: Latinos should see gay marriage a civil right
