Do you know any war veterans?

Which war? One of my brother-in-laws was out in the Falklands (Navy). A girl I work with has a BF who is in Iraq somewhere. I used to know an elderly man who grew up in the Great War then fought in the second. I know someone who used to do covert stuff during the cold war.
But I am in the UK. And while today is a public holiday, it is 'just' a holiday.
Remembrance Day (aka Veteran's Day) is the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This was Armistice Day, the day the Great War to end all wars, ended. Unlike Veteran's day it commonly remembers those that died.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
